For all you bottle digger enthusiasts out
there I have to offer a bottle finding
"Privy Probe". Probes are inserted into the
ground to check for potential bottle sites and are indispensable
when looking for privy pits (old outhouse pits); sites of
some of the last remaining undug antique bottles. The probe
shown here is a three foot probe made from 1/4" High
Grade spring steel which is used for the shaft for durability
and hardness. The handle is a two piece set-up whereas one
inch diameter 6" long threaded pipe sections screw into
the shaft assembly. This allows for portability by being able
to be broken down into pieces while maintaining structural
strength and it is 14 " across when assembled. Foam grip
handles make for comfortable gripping but are removable as
well. The tip flange (which comes up 1" from the base
of the shaft and is 1/4" in height) allows for a core
sample of dirt to be inspected upon removal due to it's slightly
wider dimension. This also allows for easier penetration into
the soil since the slightly wider tip base purges a hole ahead
of the shaft to avoid binding.
